Chambers flunked the only class he ever took on directing for theatre. He was so bad that the teacher offered to give him a D minus so he didn’t have to repeat the class. But to get the higher grade there was one requirement. Chambers had to direct a final project. He chose Christopher Durang’s Baby with the Bathwater. His teacher cast the play with one of the most beautiful actresses in the school. Chambers, wanting to spend as much time with this beauty as he could, called many extra rehearsals. And not wanting to embarrass himself in front of this young goddess he had to learn to direct. In the end he fell in love. Not with the actress but with directing. Since then he has directed thirty-seven plays by playwrights as diverse as Samuel Beckett, Neil Simon, Craig Lucus, Beth Henley, Christopher Durang, Larry Kramer, Heiner Muller, Franx Xavier Kroetz, and William Shakespeare. |
