| The Steve Spots
written and directed by David Van Hooser, is easily one of the most
rewarding television projects of Chambers’ career.
This thirty-seven episode series won six Emmys, two Gold Tellys
and the prestigious George Peabody Award.
Playing the title character of Steve gave Chambers his first opportunity
to work in front of the camera and taught him just how important
television could be.
It happened one night when NBC aired The Steve
episode on suicide. A young teenage girl was watching, a gun loaded
in her hand. Her parents were out of the house and she had chosen
this moment to end her life.
After watching the episode and the way the characters dealt with
the suicide of their friend, the young girl called the station.
With the help of Vanderbilt Medical Center the show was able to
get her treatment. Later the young girl had the opportunity to tell
Chambers about her experience. It is a lesson he won’t ever
forget.
The Steve Spots ended its run with an NBC special
called The Parent Zone which also received numerous
Emmys. But, more importantly The Parent Zone gave
Chambers his only chance to act with Betsy, a young actress who
six months later would be his wife.
